Linux player installation guide
Turn a Linux computer into an Info player that starts on its own every time the device boots. The steps below were written for Ubuntu.
Before you install
- Install the latest version of the Chrome or Chromium browser.
- Turn off the screen lock: open Settings, choose Privacy, then Screen Lock, and switch Automatic Screen Lock from On to Off.
- Hide notifications: in Settings, open Notifications, switch Do Not Disturb on and Lock Screen Notifications off.
- Keep the screen awake: in Settings, open Power, then Power Saving Options, and set Screen Blank to Never.
- Remove the programs you do not need, so nothing interferes with the signage player.
- Turn off the automatic updates of installed apps (printer tools, PDF readers and the like), so they do not pop up on screen while your content plays.
- Stop the update notifications: open Software & Updates (or run
software-properties-gtkin a terminal), go to the Updates tab, untick Automatically check for updates and, if it is there, Notify me of a new Ubuntu version, then close the app.
Note: this stops Ubuntu from downloading and installing updates on its own, which can make the system less secure and stable.
Installation
- Open a terminal.
- Copy this command, paste it into the terminal and press Enter (64-bit systems):
/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://appds.io/linux/64.sh)"The script creates a folder called
digital-signagein your home directory, downloads the player and sets it to start when the device boots. - Restart the device: type
rebootin the terminal.
General recommendations
- Keep the power always on.
- Turn off the screen saver and any power saving.
- Hide notifications, or turn them off.
